8C, as promised…the answers for the third page of your final fluids review. Answer are bolded!

Please note that we will correct and discuss the heart diagram on Tuesday at school. Good luck studying! I look forward to seeing all your filled out sheets. Tuesday, May 22 will be used as a review/study day in class. You can ask all the questions that you want that day! Don’t forget that the test is on Wednesday, May 23.

When the diaphragm pushes up, air exits the lungs.

What factors do engineers consider when deciding between hydraulic and pneumatic systems?

Whether compressed air is available

The response time to required for work

Output force

What is an advantage of each system?

P-rapid response

H-greatest output force

What is a disadvantage of each system?

P-energy is lost as heat is needed to heat air

H-more maintenance

What are three benefits of fluid power systems?

Versatile

Can do very hard or very delicate work

Save money by being very quick and efficient

What are two teaching tools that use hydraulic systems?

Motion in flight and driving simulators

What is the “jaws of life” tool used for and why does it need a special hydraulic fluid?

It’s able to cut and pry metal for opening cars and rescuing people. It needs special fluid that is fire resistance and doesn’t conduct electricity.

PAGE 4 – We will go over the heart diagram on Tuesday in class.

Answers to questions

How do you think gas on top of liquid in an aerosol can, can cause the liquid to come out of the spray nozzle?

The gas puts the liquid under pressure by pushing down on it. By pressing the button a valve opens which is connected to a narrow tube and because the liquid is under pressure the liquid goes up the tube to go from a high pressure to a low pressure area.

Bicycle pumps push air into tires. What is the purpose of the valve on the end of the hose?

It directs the flow of air into the tire and prevents air from the tire to leave.

Friday, May 11

Hi 8C! I know that a majority of you are away for either Band or the Youth weekend, I wanted to let you know that you will have homework due for Tuesday. I will be handing the sheets out to you on Monday at the science fair/expo. The sheets are the same format as section 2.19

In preperation for the sheets you can read

  • page 126-127 (section 2.20-hydraulics)
  • page 128-129 (section 2.21-pneumatics)

You will be given the first part of class (10 minutes) on Tuesday morning to complete any work that you do not have done. As a class we will review all answers and discuss the concepts that are being taught. We are very close to finishing this unit. I am PUMPED about the last unit and can’t wait to introduce it to you all!

TEST: Wednesday, May 23

Tuesday, April 24, 2012

Tonight’s homework is to complete 1 full page of your Fluids part 2 review.

Tomorrow’s class will consist of working on your review and buddy studying (if you finish your review).

We need to talk about the date in which your test will be…With NO SCHOOL on Friday, April 27 or Friday, May 4th the school day cycle will put our next day 3 together the first week of May…that’s getting a little late for a test. Again, we’ll chat tomorrow about what day is best for you guys and gals.

Great job on your Heritage Fair Projects! You should all be very proud of yourselves :)

Monday, April 23

Grade 8, your projects are due today! Thanks to those of you who handed them in early! Make sure that you read all directions and follow the instructions carefully.

You don’t need to do a glogster or a poster for this project, it’s not a requirement. You simply need to wrtie the information that you researched into a short, neat and organized report. The report MUST include a picture!

You have until lunch to make sure that you get this done. I’ll see you after lunch :)

Monday, April 16

Homework for tonight, Monday, April 16:

  • Finish section 2.14 (From Bladders to Ballast: Altering Buoyancy)
  • questions e-f-g-h and 1-2 from page 115

Also, grade 8, PLEASE remember to bring your text books to class with you. And, those of you that can’t find your books you NEED to put an all out search for them and find them…you are responsible for your materials.

Wednesday, April 4, 2012

Homework:  Due Thurday, April 5 (at the beginning of class)

  • Read “Try This” page 108 (by reading this you will be well prepared for tomorrow’s lab…which will be lots of fun!)
  • Read Archimedes’ Principle (the extended version) and do the attached worksheets

As noted above, we will be doing a lab tomorrow. I will put you into groups and you will be responsible for working together and following the directions that are provided.

Thanks for being on your best behaviour yesterday when I was out :)

Thursday, March 29

Homework: read pages 106 and 107 (we did read them in class, but reading them again will help you to answer your questions!)

Questions: 1-2-5 on page 107

  • The answers for 1 and 2 will be found in your books.
  • The answer for 5 will require you to think beyond the book and use what you have learned to answer the question

This is due on Tuesday, April 3rd at the beginning of class. I’ll be doing a home work check (as per usual)

Monday, March 26

Welcome back from March Break grade 8! I hope that you had a restful and relaxing  break. I was glad to see all of you ready to work today. Friendly reminder…you NEED to bring the following items to class daily (without these you will be considered unprepared and a note will be made)

  • calculator
  • text book
  • scribble
  • pencil

Monday night’s homework Page 103

  • 2 a, b
  • 3 a, b, c
  • 5

Students and Parents/Guardians: Parent Teacher Interviews are this Thursday evening and Friday morning. I will be here for both sessions. I look forward to meeting with you. If you can’t make it but would like to talk about your son or daughter’s science please contact me at the school and we’ll arrange a time that works for both of us to meet.

Friday, March 9, 2012

Today we completed your test reviews.  This weekend’s homework is to STUDY for your test on Monday, March 12th. Like I said in class, your review is the best study guide that you can have and use! You also need to re-read pages 84-99 in your text books, as those are the pages the test is covering. Remember that your class notes have some extra material in them that you need to know as well (like Daniel Bernoulli).

Helpful note…you MUST know the formulas

  • W=M x g (to find the force of an object on earth…and the mass needs to be in kg)
  • FR=volume of liquid (in mL) / time (always in seconds)
  • Also, know ALL definitions from your book (pg 84-99)

Bring  a calculator to class on Monday. You need it for the test. You also need to bring pencils and erasers (some of you are forgetting this on a regular basis lately so I’m just reminding you!) Lastly, please bring a book for silent reading in the case that you finish the test early.

Happy weekend :)
